Postural Changes When Wearing Clear Aligners like Invisalign®

January 02, 2018

Clear teeth aligners and posture!?  Now there’s a pair. Not necessarily a pair you would put together though! San Jose teeth aligners are popular now. Chiropractic Solutions sees many San Jose chiropractic patients who have chosen to use these new devices to straighten teeth. They are nearly invisible. They are bendable. The clear aligner wearer can take them out whenever he or she needs to take them out. Wearers get some control of the process. All is good, and yet the treatment planning like that of Invisalign® is newer technology. Everyone is finding out more about it. Chiropractic Solutions hadn’t thought that orthodontic and San Jose chiropractic treatment plans might come in contact with each other. Surprise!

TOOTH ALIGNMENT TREATMENT AND PLANNING

Most San Jose chiropractic patients remember (too well for some!)  the classic fixed appliances (braces) used in orthodontics to straighten teeth. Many San Jose orthodontic patients lived with them! Research shows that in using Invisalign® technology, tooth type and movement are crucial factors to consider when the treatment plan is set. Invisalign® technology permits clinicians to forecast tooth positions with high accuracy when done in nonextraction cases, but some of the actual outcomes may differ from those expectations. Most variances were not clinically relevant though. (1) Malocclusion (a misalignment or faulty relationship of the teeth of the two dental arches when they come close to each other when the jaws close) changes teeth straightening treatment planning. When comparing Invisalign aligners to conventional fixed appliances for mild to moderate malocclusion issues, they both improved the condition. Invisalign® wearers completed their care faster (by 5.7 months!). Invisalign® improvement was not as “great” in effectiveness as fixed appliances. (2) One study decided to determine associations between body posture in the sagittal profile and sagittal jaw position. The mandible (lower jaw)  has a greater influence on body posture than other craniofacial factors, so patients with severe malocclusions ought to be extended extra attention particularly if a jaw surgery is planned. (3) Chiropractic Solutions is in line with having the San Jose orthodontists determine this!

TOOTH ALIGNMENT WITH INVISALIGN AND POSTURE

But Chiropractic Solutions is ready to help when posture issues arise in the process of aligning teeth . A recent study points out that clear, occlusal coverage aligners like Invisalign® may well sway body posture. The upper spine and lower spine sections are involved. When clear aligner wearers were examined after 6 months of use, the Kyphosis Angle, the Upper Thoracic Inclination and Pelvic Inclination were altered.  It has been reported that these clear aligners change a wearer’s vertical height due to the occlusal coverage over the teeth and, then, stimulate periodontal receptors inhibiting the jaw closing muscles and, likely, changing  mandibular posture. (4) Chiropractic Solutions is as astonished as our San Jose chiropractic patients with all that is possible with these clear aligners! Chiropractic Solutions is aware of this potential and looks for it in San Jose chiropractic patients who wear these.
