Additional San Jose Nutritional Options for Neuropathy
Neuropathic pain is an uncomfortable condition. The common approach for conventional medicine is pharmacological drugs. Some patients are satisfied with this approach while others look beyond medication in the light of less than desired relief. New realizations are indicating an inflammation/gut connection that may be a factor. Nutritional supplements factor into the situation for these San Jose neuropathy pain sufferers. Chiropractic Solutions as a member of their healthcare team shares some new studies on the effectiveness of these additional nutritional options.
NUTRITION FOR NEUROPATHY PAIN
Seven to 10% of the population suffers with neuropathic pain. Common treatment options include tricyclic antidepressant drugs, serotonin-noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors, and anticonvulsants. For some sufferers, these options don’t always fulfill their expectations, so they check into nonpharmacologic treatments like nutritional supplements. Some try vitamins B and D, zinc, magnesium, and St. John’s wart and curcumin. (1) In a new rat study, the antinociceptive effect of biotin (a B vitamin, namely B7) on neuropathic pain was evaluated and confirmed it as a potential therapy for neuropathic pain. The study found that biotin supplementation could decrease the required dosage of analgesic drugs. (2) Other nutritional means have been tried like magnesium, ALA, and GLA but need to be cautiously utilized in certain patients with specific conditions (like renal dysfunction). Again, Vitamin B supplementation was found to be well tolerated and to be more effective in relieving neuropathic pain than medications alone. (3) Chiropractic Solutions will blend options to help patients find pain relief.
COMBINATION OF APPROACHES NEUROPATHY RELIEF
Combinations of treatments often do more than one. For neuropathy, combining the knowledge that metabolic syndrome and neuropathy are associated with lifestyle changes, researchers found that diet and lifestyle interventions help handle neuropathy. Since the gut microbiome and inflammation influence neuropathy, researchers studied and recognized value in exercise, nutrition, supplements, acupuncture and mindfulness-based practices in neuropathy care. (4) One study specifically combined mindfulness with vitamin D to find how it affected the lives of diabetic neuropathy patients. It worked! The combination reduced pain severity and disability which improved their quality of life. (5) At Chiropractic Solutions we add gentle spinal manipulation via the Cox® Technic System of Spinal Pain Management into the treatment plan to help manage relief.
