Could a Plant Compound Help Protect Your Intervertebral Discs?

July 29, 2026

If you've ever dealt with disc-related back pain or neck pain, you realize how essential healthy spinal discs are to moving comfortably through your day. Now, exciting new research is investigating a natural compound called quercetin — found in foods like apples, onions, and berries — and its potential to slow down disc degeneration at the cellular level.

WHAT IS QUERCETIN?

Quercetin is a plant pigment known as a flavonoid. It's already well-regarded for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory qualities, but two studies published in 2026 dove further into how it may directly support the health of your spinal discs.

WHAT THE RESEARCH FOUND

The first study, published in Tissue & Cell, found that quercetin helps protect nucleus pulposus cells — the soft, gel-like cells at the center of each spinal disc that act as your body's natural shock absorbers. (1) Researchers found that quercetin works by calming down a specific inflammatory pathway and boosting a cellular "clean-up" process called mitochondrial autophagy. In simple terms, this helps disc cells eliminate worn components and function better, which may help delay the degeneration process.

The second study, published in the Naunyn-Schmiedeberg's Archives of Pharmacology, took a unique view. (2) Using sophisticated genetic analysis, researchers determined that fibrosis — a kind of scarring — in nucleus pulposus cells plays a key part in disc degeneration. They found that quercetin appears effective as an anti-scarring agent, meaning it may help stop this scarring process from progressing.

WHY THIS MATTERS FOR YOU

While additional research is needed before quercetin becomes a regular part of disc care, these findings add to a increasing body of evidence that nutrition and natural compounds can play a helpful role alongside conservative, non-surgical spinal care like chiropractic treatment. At Chiropractic Solutions, we believe in a comprehensive approach to spinal health — blending hands-on chiropractic care with everyday life activities that support your body's own healing.
