San Jose Knee Osteoarthritis and Quality of Life with a Mediterranean Diet

What do creaky, noisy, cracking knees and olive oil, fruits, veggies and red wine have in common? Knee osteoarthritis! San Jose knee pain sufferers experience that morning routine with “bad” knees, the stiffness and pain that is part of waking up and moving. Chiropractic Solutions hears our San Jose chiropractic patients describe this all the time. Those San Jose knee pain sufferers would be pleased to get some relief. What is one approach? The Mediterranean diet that requires, of all things, eating. Chiropractic Solutions wonders “How hard can eating be for San Jose knee pain relief?”

San Jose OSTEOARTHRITIS SUFFERERS AND THEIR PAIN

San Jose knee osteoarthritis is widespread. There are numerous San Jose knee pain sufferers. They are not alone! 240 million people around the world suffer with osteoarthritis. That affects about 10% of men and 18% of women. (1) Any San Jose knee osteoarthritis sufferer can describe the knee pain, the morning stiffness, and the creaky joint motion that lessens the quality of daily life. (1) It’s just not much fun. Now a Mediterranean diet could be some fun though!

WHAT TO EAT ON A MEDITERRANEAN DIET

The Mediterranean diet incorporates lots of fruits and vegetable, legumes and nuts, cereals and seeds, seafood and fish. The Mediterranean diet allows for moderate intake of dairy, poultry and eggs along with red wine and olive oil as the main source of dietary lipids. (1) Yum! Consuming a Mediterranean diet can be quite tasty and adventurous for a recent Mediterranean diet follower.

BENEFITS OF THE MEDITERRANEAN DIET

Knee osteoarthritis involves inflammation as well as pain. A review of 3 research reports highlights that biomarkers of inflammation and cartilage degradation because of osteoarthritis fell in the Mediterranean diet group. (1) Specifically, the pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-1α decreased in the Mediterranean diet group. (2) Knee osteoarthritis patients who better followed a Mediterranean diet have lowered risk of worsening knee pain at 4 years follow up. For those who did not have knee osteoarthritis at the start of the 4 years project and followed a Mediterranean diet, a 9% lowered risk of acquiring knee osteoarthritis was found. (3) Overall, a higher adherence to a Mediterranean diet is associated with better quality of life and less pain, disability and depressive symptoms. (4)
